While some prisons in Africa are actually quite nice with televisions, toilets, gym rooms, nice food etc there are still numerous prison in Africa, that can be rightfully be referred to as hell on earth. Here are five worst prisons in Africa.

1. Chikurubi Maximum Prison - Zimbabwe

This max Prison is the largest correctional facility in Zimbabwe. Located on the outskirts of the country's capital, it houses about 17 000 prisoners both men, and women. The cells typically measures 9 m by 30 feet and there can be as many as 40 prisoners housed in each cell. Chikurubi Max Prison just like the other prisons on the list is known for its overcrowding, guard brutality, malnutrition, no health care, and poor sanitary conditions. Prisoners here spend much of the day locked up and have few recreational activities.

2. Kinshasa Penitentiary - Congo

It's a prison in Congo with more than 850 prisoers packed like sardines, into a facility built for 150. Inmates sleep in hallways near septic tanks, disease outbreaks is a daily occurrence in the prison. In 2009 the prison was named the worst in Africa by a top United Nations human rights official.

3. Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison - Nigeria

This maximum security prison is the most popular prison in Nigeria for it's congestion, besides the problem of overcrowding as there could be up to 50 inmates in a cell intended for fewer people. It is also infamous for its degrading treatment of prisoners, appealing living conditions substandard medical care, and a very high death rate.

4. Mukobico Maximum Security Prison - Zambia

Mukobico prison cells were originally built to accommodate one inmate per cell however, now it hold up to 15 prisoners with little ventilation, the prison often experience outbreaks of diseases such as tuberculosis. The prison is also known for its guard brutality, malnutrition, rat infestations, overpopulation etc.

5. Nairobi Industrial Remand Prison Kenya

Built in 1911 for 800 prisoners, it had 3000 prisoners in 2003. This prison is one of the most congested in Africa, the prison cell reek of sweat, human waste, and filled with the stench of garbage hanging in the air, generally living conditions in the prison has made it a struggle for the prisoners to be physically and mentally healthy.
