John Pombe Joseph Magufuli is one of the African presidents who have died in office. He was a renowned Tanzanian politician. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli biography

The late president was born on 29th October 1959 in Chato, Tanganyika, presently known as Tanzania. He was raised in the Kagera region, currently known as the Geita region. He was the son of Mzee Joseph Magufuli (father) and Mama Suzana Magufuli (mother). Joseph Magufuli's family engaged in various farming activities. As a result, the former president grew up taking care of his father's cattle. He had one sibling, a sister known as Monica Joseph Magufuli. She passed away in 2018 after a short illness.

Education

The late president studied at several institutes for primary and secondary school studies. Some of the schools he attended were: 1967 to 1974 - Chato Primary School 1975 to 1977 - Katoke Seminary in Biharamulo 1977 to 1978 - Lake Secondary School After completing his secondary school education, he joined Mkwawa High School for his advanced level studies from 1979 to 1981. Later on, he went to a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam known as Mkwawa College of Education for a Diploma in Education Science with a major in Chemistry, Mathematics and Education. He also earned his masters and a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1994 and 2009, respectively. In 2019, the University of Dodoma gave him an honorary doctorate for improving the country's economy.

Early career

After his university studies, he started working as a teacher in The Sengerema Secondary School. He taught Mathematics and Chemistry between 1981 and 1982. He quit teaching to work as an industrial chemist at The Nyanza Cooperative Union. He worked at the union from 1989 to 1995, after which he was elected to represent Chato district as their Member of Parliament. Shortly after, he was promoted to a ministerial position. On 4th January 2006, he became the Minister of Lands and Human Settlement after President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete took office. He served as the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries between 2008 and 2010. He was the Minister of Works from 2010 to 2015.

Presidency

On 12th July 2015, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) nominated him as their presidential candidate for the 2015 general elections. He won the majority vote during the final round against: Asha-Rose Migiro - Minister of Justice and former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General. Amina Salum Ali - The African Union Ambassador to the United States of America. The election was held on 25th October 2015. On 29th October 2015, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) declared him the winner with 58% of the total cast votes. On 5th November 2015, he was sworn in as the president of Tanzania and his running mate Samia Suluhu. After completing his first term, CCM nominated him as their presidential candidate for the elections scheduled to occur in October 2020. Magufuli garnered the highest votes and thus re-elected to extend his second presidential term until 2025. While in office, the president made various changes to make the country a better place. Magufuli passed away on Wednesday, 17th March 2021, from heart complications at a hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was receiving treatment. The vice president of Tanzania announced his death on state television. It is with deep sorrow that I inform you that today....we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli. The vice president also announced that there would be 14 days of national mourning. In addition, the flags would fly at half-mast. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli was the fifth president of Tanzania until his demise in March 2021. He will be remembered for the great changes he made and for positively impacting the nation. The presidency is the most coveted seat in a democratic state. Clinching the head of state position is a dream for many politicians. One is accorded the highest respect in the land and treated with dignity. It is unfortunate that most of the presidents who die in office hold on to power until their demise. The majority who use totalitarian means to rule often amend the constitution to get rid of term limits.
